So much has happened since the last time I updated (way back in January, which is hard to believe. I'll try to touch on everything as briefly as I can since I really don't feel like writing an autobiography at the moment.

This semester has been really busy with all the work I've had to do, especially the last few weeks. I'm going to officially be finished with classes by the end of next week. I don't really have many finals either, so that's a plus. I graduate on May 12th, which is crazy. I can't believe I've technically been up here for two years already, it seriously feels like I just moved up here. I have student teaching in the fall, so I won't technically be finished when I march, but that's ok. Classes have been alright... there are a few that really are a waste of my time, but when are there not classes that waste your time? I've been going into the schools once a week this semester. I've been going to Old Town Elementary in a first grade classroom with Janet. It's awesome to be able to work with someone I've known for so long. I really love going into the schools and working with the kids. I've taught a few lessons too, and I've had a ball. So far so good with the whole teaching thing.

So I spent most of this semester unemployed, which really sucked. I literally didn't have any money to do much of anything. I think the only time I went home was briefly during spring break. Dan had planned a trip for us to go to Bar Harbor for the weekend (it was my Valentine's Day present) and it was a lot of fun. The only thing that sucked was that since Bar Harbor is such a tourist town, a lot of the shops and things to do around there were closed for the season. We plan to go there sometime soon for a day trip before the tourists start showing up. It was a great little trip though, we went to Acadia and a lot of great little restaurants and saw some beautiful sights. We had planned to go to Boston for St. Patrick's Day since the Hockey East Championships were going on then, but Maine decided to not show up and let UMass go instead. We did, however, take a trek down to UMass for the last game of the regular season. I thought BC and UNH fans were bad... UMass fans were the worst. Considering we almost got attacked about ten times from fans stalking us after the game... it was probably the worst experience of my life. The fact that Maine lost the game didn't make it any better. For more details, ask me. That's really the tip of the iceberg. We did have fun on St. Patrick's Day though. Dan and I went to Portland to go out drinking, and after 5 hours, my brother finally decided to join us.

We were really upset with the fact that the UMass game was more than likely the last time we'd ever see the hockey team play this year. It was especially saddening because there are so many guys in our class that we've watched since we were in college and now they're gone. There's so many graduating! Michel Leveille, Josh Soares, Keith Johnson, Mike Lundin, Mike Hamilton and Brent Shepheard are all gone this year. I'm gonna miss watching them all play, especially Leveille and Soares. Anyway, so we were bummed out that we wouldn't see them again, because let's face it, after losing four games in a row to UMass... we didn't think we'd make the playoffs. But, we did. We also beat UMass to go onto the Frozen Four in St. Louis. So, since we were seniors and we wanted to support our senior class, a whole bunch of us were finding any way possible to get out west to see them play. So, after a lot of talking with my parents, they agreed to let me go out to St. Louis with a bunch of people and they'd cover part of it as a graduation present. So, just two days after Maine won in Rochester, I had booked a flight out to St. Louis. Needless to say, I was pumped.

There were a lot of things that happened in the week before I left for St. Louis. Mostly just running around and trying to get work done, but there was also something that no one was expecting. For those of you who go to South Portland High, or went when I was there, you might know Jason Swiger. Anyway, once he graduated high school, he enlisted in the Army. He was not a great friend of mine, but he was someone that I spent a lot of time with for a few months. Anyway, he was killed in Iraq just a few weeks ago. He was killed when he stopped to pass out candy to Iraqi children. It was quite a shock, especially since Angel Rosa was just killed a week before. I had been following the news ever since the war started and whenever they would announce another casualty from Maine, I always prayed that it wasn't Jason or anyone else I knew over there. I was so upset when I found out, not just because I knew him, but because there are so many people that have been close to me who knew him well. I knew that they were going through hell. Jason's wake was the Tuesday before I left for my trip and his funeral was the morning I left. I couldn't go to the funeral, but I left Old Town early to go to his wake. It was so surreal being there, I still didn't believe that it had happened. There were people there that I haven't seen in four years. I felt some sort of guilt that I hadn't kept in contact with them or called them to say hello every once in a while. Since Jason has died, I've found myself talking a lot more with old friends. Mim and I have gotten in contact a lot lately. We even talked on the phone like we always did in middle school in high school. I think she said it best. Even though it's tragic that Jason died, there is always one good thing you can get out of tragedy. The fact that Jason died has brought his old group of friends back together again. You really can't take people for granted because you never know when they'll be gone. I hope that Jason helps everyone to get in contact with each other again, because if he could do one last thing for his friends, I'm pretty sure this would be it. Well, that and make everyone laugh.

So on Wednesday, I did a few errands and then we all drove down to Manchester to catch our flight. It was snowing really hard, so it took them about a half an hour to de-ice the plane. It made me a little nervous since I hadn't flown in a long time. We flew from Manchester to Chicago and then from Chicago to St. Louis. We got to St. Louis around eight thirty or so. We went out to dinner at The Dubliner the first night we were there and it was so awesome. That place was definitely my favorite place in St. Louis. The next day, we went to the pep rally at Paddy O's near Busch Stadium. It was pretty awesome seeing where the Red Sox won the World Series, even though the old stadium was torn down. Anyway, we all had drinks and good food before the game. I wish we could say the game was as good. We scored twice in the first four minutes... and that was it. Michigan State ended up beating us 4-2. It was really heartbreaking considering I was so sure that we'd win it all. But, I would have much rather lose to Michigan State than BC. The North Dakota/BC game was awesome, even though ND was eliminated. It figures, both of the teams that I wanted to win it the most ended up losing in the first round. Little did we know that one of the best games was going to happen during the championship.

We had a day off on Friday to walk around St. Louis and explore. We went to the arch, obviously. It was pretty awesome standing right next to it. I remember a teacher in middle school had a poster of the arch in his classroom, so that's all I think about when I see it now. Anyway, we had to wait so long to get inside the arch, where there's an underground museum. Little did we know we were just waiting in line to get past security and there were more lines to get tickets to take the tram up to the top of the arch. Once we got through security, we had wasted an hour and a half. We just walked around the museum and then went to get lunch since we didn't eat breakfast before we left. We had planned to come back to the arch, but we never made it back. At least I got some pretty great pictures. We went to lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe at Union Station near the Scottrade Center. It was my first time being in a Hard Rock, so it was awesome. The food was ok, but I guess you pay for the atmosphere. They had Jimi Hendrix' coat, John Bonham's drum and Slash's guitar on the wall, I thought I was going to die. (Of course, I got pictures.) That night, we went to the Hobey Baker award ceremony and the Superskills Challenge. We went out to dinner after that got done at this Italian place near the arch. I loved the city since it was so easy to navigate. We went back to the hotel since we had to get up early to do more sightseeing. You can only imagine what was on our agenda the next day.

For the beer lovers reading this, most of you probably know that Anheuser-Busch is based in St. Louis, so naturally, we went on the brewery tour. It was a little ways away from the hotel, so we had to take a cab. I didn't think it'd be all that big, but this place was massive. We got to look around in the lobby for a bit before we went on the tour. The first part of the tour (and my favorite!) was the Clydesdale stables. I've always wanted to see these horses and I've never had the chance. These animals were MASSIVE. I didn't think a horse could get that big, but they were so beautiful. They had the dalmatians running around too. The tour was about an hour long and they took us in and out of tons of different buildings involved in brewing the beer. It was really interesting, plus we got free beer at the end of the tour.

After the brewery tour, we went back to the hotel to get our hockey stuff for the championship game. We went to Flannery's for dinner before the game and then walked to the Scottrade. The game itself was awesome, BC was winning for most of the game until late in the third period, Michigan State scored to tie the game 1-1. Then with just 18 seconds left, Michigan State scored again to make it 2-1. The place was going crazy, especially the Maine section. Only a select few were cheering for BC in the Maine section. When they scored, it was like Maine scoring in the national championship. No one wanted BC to win, including the North Dakota fans. BC ended up pulling Schneider to try and tie it up, but Michigan State got an empty netter to make it 3-1 with just 2 seconds left. It was so satisfying seeing BC look on as Michigan State was celebrating at the other end of the ice. I've got some wonderful pictures of Boyle and Gerbe too... oh man, so satisfying. I don't normally hate individual players, but Boyle and Gerbe take the cake in the classless asshole category. It was a great hockey game, so even though we were eliminated on Thursday, I was still happy that I went to St. Louis. The city was so beautiful and everyone was so nice, stopping us on the streets and saying, "Welcome to St. Louis." We were a little hesitant to go there since it's supposedly one of the most dangerous cities in the country, but the areas we were in were great. I'd definitely go back there again. There's tons that I wanted to see that we didn't get the chance to. We were pretty sad coming back on the plane on Sunday, but it was good to be back in a normal routine again. Since St. Louis, not much has happened with me aside from trying to scramble to get work done. It was so hard the first week being back too since it was like I was coming off of a vacation all over again.

However, I do have somewhat of a plan for this summer. I went to the mall the other day and I was offered my old job back at Yankee Candle, so I start again next Monday. I'll be working there until rec camp starts up at the end of June. Once camp is done, I'll be working at Yankee Candle again and then school starts again... it'll be weird not being in a classroom where I do the learning, but I absolutely can't wait to get out there and teach. I hope everyone else is doing well and enjoying the wonderful weather!

Here are pictures from St. Louis!!!Collapse )

so... where to start.

um, semester has been uber crazy. uber. i can't believe that it's halfway through already. seriously, where the hell does the time go? i seem to be doing well in my classes... when i do the work. yeah, i need to work on that. i have a lot of book documentations to do for my ERL 317 class, a few articles to do reviews on and a few more projects. but for the most part, a lot of the really pressing stuff is done for now.

my job has been pretty ok. i find that some people are downright rude to you, but that's pretty much to be expected sometimes. i just hate it when people think they're so much better than you for working at the mall when all you're trying to do is help them out and make a few bucks. but, as one of my managers said, it's pretty tough to not get rude people when you're selling candles to the hicks in bangor, maine. this is very true. we've started in with christmas already. the day after halloween, the christmas CDs were on repeat and the store was completely decked out in a winter wonderland. i already want to shoot myself. if i hear that fucking cracked out version of "jingle bells" one more time, i will shoot myself. at least when i come home from work, i smell good.

hockey games have been a lot of fun so far this year. the team is still number one in the country after three weeks. they tied BU this weekend, which is the first blemish on the record, but hey, at least we're still undefeated. we play umass-lowell on friday and UNH on sunday. i hope the wait for this game isn't as bad as the wait for the last hockey game. do you remember that really bad storm we got almost 2 weeks ago on a saturday? you know, the one with tropical storm force winds and absolute downpours? yeah, i was waiting out in line for 2+ hours in that. after ten minutes, my jeans were completely soaked through. there isn't a worse feeling in the world aside from cold, wet jeans. after about an hour, my 5 layers of shirts and a hockey jersey and my jacket were soaked through to the very last layer. it was absolutely miserable. it was by far the worst time i've ever had to wait outside before. my dad was completely amazed... at least he brought a rain suit for me this past weekend just in case we have to wait outside in a monsoon again. but, we beat umass amherst 4-1... i think it was a great game. plus, we started the wave and the entire alfond started doing it, including the maine bench. now that was awesome.

halloween was pretty fun, aside from the fact that it was pouring out. leah (my roommate) and i wanted to go out trick-or-treating, but we didn't because it started raining literally around four. so we just stayed in and put our light on just in case we'd get any kids. we got none. not a single one. it made me sad because i had it all decorated and everything. i'll have to take and post pictures of it sometime soon, seeing as the decorations are coming down within the next few days. anyway, i was a pirate this year for halloween. dan was going to be a pirate with me, but he changed his mind and was edge instead. i got a super cool costume at hot topic for 20 bucks (hooray for 50% off!) i wanted to make mine, but i didn't have the time. so anyway, i got all dressed up as a pirate and pretty much the only thing to do was go to ushuaia's. so we get there and there are tons of people going in. i didn't like the scene there much at all considering every single girl that was in line to get in was wearing absolutely nothing in terms of a costume, but then nothing on top of it. it was cold, it was raining and they looked stupid. c'mon, if you're going to dress up as a devil for halloween, would you wear a red bra, red underwear, red fishnets, horns and a tail if it was 40 degrees and raining out?! plus the fact that she was barely 18. anyway, the halloween ball was 18+ and most the girls there were only about 18. they started turning them away at the door around 11 because there were just too many of them and they knew they'd make more business with the 21+ kids. so we waited outside in the rain to get in for about an hour, nearly getting run over and trampled about 10 times. anyway, we got in and went to the bar and everything. i didn't like the scene overall because it was just so slutty. there were girls dancing on the bar with guys giving them dollars and hollering at them and the girls basically flashing them. it was really stupid. half of the hockey team was there, of course. there were some pretty great costumes there. two of the hockey players dressed up as mario and luigi from super mario brothers... and there was a guy who looked EXACTLY like jack sparrow, it was awesome. so anyway, we went dancing. i only had 2 drinks considering i had to get up for an 8 a.m. class the next morning. it was fun once the crowd started to leave. definitely not my scene, but at least i can say i went out for halloween this year, AND had a kickass costume.

so how's everyone else doing?

it's amazing how i can't remember what happened last week on specific days. i can't remember what i did the day before most the time. but i remember what happened five years ago. i remember it as if it was today, sitting in class, hearing the knock on the door, the teachers talking, the t.v. being rolled in front of the classroom. i remember seeing the buildings burning, papers and debris flying everywhere, huge smoke plumes billowing into the sky, sirens wailing and people screaming on the streets below. we were so oblvious to what was actually panning out before us, we all thought that everyone was out of the buildings. we didn't think that there were people in the buildings, they had been evacuated. we didn't know that our lives from that day on would be changed. we didn't know that we'd be living in fear of big cities and crowded streets, airplanes and an entire race. i've changed a lot in these five years, but nothing will ever change the sadness and anger i felt that day when three thousand people died for simply being american.

i'll never forget where i was that day, what i did and how i felt. i haven't met a single person who has forgotten. we should never forget 9/11/01.

ok, so david ortiz is awesome, that's all i have to say. i was just watching the sox game and he hit a 3 run home run in the bottom of the 9th to win it by 1 point. there really isn't a point in this opening, i guess i just wanted to brag that i'm going to a sox game tomorrow night with my family and i'm uber excited for it.

it's the last week of camp already. holy god where did this summer go? it's gone by so fast and i feel like i haven't done much yet. august is going to be a busy month with packing, moving, travelling and all that good junk. i like being busy though.

so yeah... nothing else more to say right now, i'm still too excited from that home run.

so, i should probably update this thing every once in a while, huh? there's a lot to write about, but i figure if you talk to me on a regular basis, you know most of what i'm going to write about.

so i'll talk about camp for a bit. it's been going pretty well so far. for those of you who don't know, i have third grade this year. i was not happy at all when i found out that i had third grade, but it's really not as bad as i thought it was going to be. i know most of my kids and i have a pretty good relationship with all of them. i don't exactly like the way camp is being run all that much for various reasons, but i love most of the people i work with. all the rec camp vets are sticking pretty close together this year. i've been hanging out with conor and ali a lot. they introduced me to the hookah a few weeks ago, it's pretty interesting. nothing i'd do on a regular basis, but it's pretty relaxing every once in a while. i went out to salmon falls with conor, ali and josh (another kid i work with) last monday and we had a blast, aside from the fact that i got eaten alive by mosquitoes. we had a staff outing last week that was totally awesome too. we all went to margarita's first, then down to j's oyster bar to visit a co-worker that works there. it was so awesome because most of us sat outside on the patio and talked for 2 hours. staff-wise, i love camp this year... i just wish things were running a little more smoothly.

the nine inch nails concert was seriously the best concert i've seen since tool. they were so amazing. they played a lot of old stuff, especially from pretty hate machine. they only played three songs off the new album. the lights and stuff like that were so awesome. i'm still sad that we couldn't get on the floor, but that's ok, we stood the entire time anyway. our seats really weren't bad, so that made it better. i definitely want to see them again. after the concert, dan and i went to the stadium to eat and have a few drinks. i got to go to work the next day, hooray.

4th of july this year was pretty good too. i went up to orono the night before and spent it with dan. we went out to my aunt's house the next day with my family. i haven't been out there in like, years. it was absolutely pouring out when we got there and it thundered for a little bit, but it eventually cleared up. i saw basically everyone there aside from jared and my brother. it was nice to see jill and jesse as well. melissa and claudette had all of their kids with them, it was so weird to remember when we were their age having those cookouts. jill, jesse and i talked about when we were kids in the kitchen for a few minutes, it's still pretty crazy how fast time flies. i really liked having dan there too because he was able to meet my entire family. i hadn't seen aunt debbie and uncle jimmy in a very long time... i think since my high school graduation. we all had to crowd into the pool house in the morning since it was raining, so all the kids started showing up and dan and i were in the corner on the couch and my aunt debbie came up to us and said, "there's one way to make this better... sit here, drink and get totally smashed." well, we didn't get totally smashed, but we had a few drinks. we all ate and had dessert, then dan and i went swimming for a bit before we left. we wanted to get back in time for the fireworks, but we ended up seeing the grand finale. we saw a lot of them from the highway though, so we didn't completely miss them. after that, we walked around bug light for a bit (i fell on my ass when i didn't see a gopher hole in front of me, funniest thing ever!) we came back here and went to bed soon after that because per usual, i had to work in the morning.

i haven't really been doing much other than working. last week i went out a lot with co-workers, but other than that, i have no life. i've gone up to orono a few times to visit with dan and move stuff into my apartment. speaking of, i have pictures!!!
